A Few Ways To Go Green With Shipping Supplies

Isabella Lynch

If your business involves shipping your goods to customers, you use a lot of products that are going to be thrown out. Cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, and shipping peanuts usually end up in a landfill somewhere. This is not good for the environment and therefore gives your business a bad name. To help reduce the amount of waste your company ships out, here are a few tips for going green in your shipping department.

Use Recycled Products

It is not enough to ask your customers to recycle the boxes, plastic bubbles, and paper your products are shipped in. Find shipping materials that are made from recycled products. In addition, reuse the shipping materials that come with the things you make your products with. While you may not be able to use the boxes that have a different company name on them, you can certainly save any packing peanuts, wrapping paper, and bubbles. Not only will this make your business more eco-friendly, but it will also save you from having to buy some of the things you need to send out your goods.

Use Eco-Friendly Materials

As more people become concerned about the environment, the more biodegradable materials are being made. You can find plastic wrap and bubbles that are made from plants and/or sugar. These products will biodegrade into the earth without causing any harm or add toxic chemicals to the soil. Use these instead of the regular ones that are made of petroleum or fuel-based ingredients.

Use Smaller Packages

If you are having to add a bunch of styrofoam or packing peanuts, the box is too big. Use boxes that are just big enough for the products. This saves on not only cardboard but on all the filling materials, too. The less you use, the less material ends up in a landfill. In addition, the boxes will fit better on the trucks, allowing you to fit more on, so you don't have to make as many trips. As an added bonus, using less will save you money.

As a business owner, part of your responsibility is to the community. This includes doing what you can to keep the environment safe for plants, animals, and people. Using chemical-laden plastics and styrofoam is not being responsible. Find alternatives to any shopping materials that will sit in a landfill somewhere. Consumers will notice that you care and will use your products more often. Between the money saved on the new packaging and the increased business, it should be a no-brainer.
